It has been announced that Channel 9 in Australia will not be renewing their rights to cover The Wimbledon Championships next year.

Covering the year’s third Grand Slam for 40 years, Channel 9 has decided to focus its attention on more popular sports.

“Unfortunately it hasn’t rated well in recent years and we think that money is now better invested on other sporting properties,” said a spokesperson for Channel 9.

We arent too sure at the moment if this means either Channel 10, Channel 7 or the ABC, will be trying to secure the rights for the Wimbledon Championships 2011.

This is very upsetting news, Australia doesn’t broadcast enough tennis as it is and to see this go! Hopefully another channel will snap up the opportunity.

Im from Australia and they may not show much tennis, but they still show a lot more there compared to here in the UK!

Just found out through google. This is extremely disapointing. Now only one slam (AO) is shown in Australia.
I wonder if Channel 9 will also stop showing the ‘Highlights’ from Roland Garros too?

Hopefully another Free-to-air channel picks it up and gives it decent coverage, but I doubt it…
NOW I remember, Channel Nine used to interrupt matches with 3 hours of cricket before cutting back, the primarily reason I missed alot of matches in 2010.
