in Grand Slams

marat-safin-french-open-2009Marat Safin has gone out of the French Open yesterday in a marathon match. Marat lost to Josselin Ouanna 7-6 7-6 4-6 3-6 10-8. This is a great upset for Ouanna who has had is best ever grand slam performance in front of his home crowd. Ouanna has now won both of his opening two matches in five sets.

Ouaana who was a great junior player has really struggled to progress and beat the big boys on tour. I had the priverledge to play with Ouanna about fours years ago on the ITF circuit in France and he had a huge amount of promise. Ouanna is one of the young players who the French Tennis Federation has been growing since a young age, other players include Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gael Mofils.

It is great to see some new faces on tour and actually having some good results, but it is always sad to see Marat Safin head out of another grand slam. Enjoy the trip back home to Russia Marat.
