The comment was that this news article was the catalyst to speed up a Melbourne City proposal awaiting approval. I did not probe into the details however, it appears that the 'take it away from Melbourne' message was strong and prompted Melbourne to take action. Melbourne Park is such a fantastic venue. I played there for several days recently and it is magic on the outside courts at night with the buildings of the city only a few minutes walk away. I hope it stays there for a very long time. The ITF is a base company, so they have the rights to what tournaments are Grand Slams or not. If Sydney added a tournament to the calendar then the ITF could decided that this new tournament is now classed as a Grand Slam and will replace Melbourne! @Alan Im not so sure about that. As such, it is OWNED by Australia. Anyone who thinks that that the Australian government would allow their national tennis tournament (such a lucrative event) to be transferred to another country, has rocks in their head. Other countries may stage an event they call the 'Grand Slam of Asia', etc, HOWEVER, it will not be a replacement for the Australian Open. All it will be is an additional tournament.
