Monfils & Fish Out Of Davis Cup

Gael Monfils has been forced to withdraw from the French team due to play the USA in the 2nd Round of this years Davis Cup.

During a practice session on Sunday he developed pain and a subsequent MRI scan has revealed a lesion on his left oblique muscle. This injury will need approximately 15 days to heal putting his entry into the Monte-Carlo Masters at risk, the tournament starts on Monday 16 April. French Captain, Guy Forget, is yet to name a replacement.

Mardy Fish has not travelled with the USA team after a health scare brought about by a “heavy playing schedule”. Doctors advised the 30 year old to rest and team Captain Jim Courier has called on the services of young hopeful Ryan Harrison.

‘I’m extremely disappointed that I am physically unable to join the team,’ read a statement from Fish. ‘I had a minor health scare in Miami last week and stayed in Florida to heed the doctor’s recommendation to rest for a few days.

‘I hope to be able to resume my training later this week and possibly compete next week in Houston. I value every opportunity to compete in Davis Cup and wish I could be with my teammates this week.’

A speedy recovery to both players.

Rafter Not Concerned With Tomic

The most recent Bernard Tomic controversy is the last possible thing on Patrick Rafter’s mind before Australia’s Davis Cup play-off with South Korea

”Is it a distraction? I guess only time will tell but I don’t think so,” Rafter said of the Tomic incident.

”Bernie is not here yet so I don’t know where his head space is right now.

”Until he shows up and we have a good chat [I won't know], but I am predicting there won’t be.”

Roger Federer has already left the hard courts behind him and has started training on clay courts. Roger has an upcoming Davis Cup match against the United States this month in Fribourg.

ITF To Use Hawk-Eye on Davis Cup and Fed Cup World Groups – But Who Pays

The ITF have finally decided to expand the use of Hawk-Eye replay technology for all rounds in the Davis Cup and Fed Cup World Groups.

The replay technology is used only for matches on hard and grass courts. Thus, it will be interesting to see if can be added to clay courts. Plus, with this addition does that mean the ITF will pay for Hawk-Eye to be implemented? or will the clubs or national organisations need to pay?

Alex Corretja New Spanish Davis Cup Captain

Alex Corretja has taken over as Spainish Davis Cup Captain. Corretja replaces another former top player as Davis Cup captain, Albert Costa.

“It’s a privilege to be able to captain the best team of players in the world,” said Corretja.

Its all scheduled to be officially announced at a press conference today.

Albert Costa No Longer Spain Davis Cup Captain

Albert Costa has decided to step down as Spain’s Davis Cup captain. Costa is set to become the coordinator of the Spanish federation’s national teams.

Costa was the captain of the Spanish Davis Cup team for three years and in that time was able to help them lift the title twice.

Costa says “after three fantastic years leading the Davis Cup team, I now look forward to this new challenge.”

It wasnt a great weekend for Novak Djokovic! Djokovic hurt his back in the Davis Cup match against Juan Martin Del Potro, which allowed Argentina to defeat Serbia and move into the final.

In the third game of the second set, Djokovic re-aggravated the back injury he first had during the US Open.

Rafael Nadal is Tired But Will Be Ready for Davis Cup Semifinal

Rafael Nadal told DavisCup.com that he is tired in the lead up to the Davis Cup tie between Spain and France.

“I played very long match and for sure it is a challenge for me. I am trying for my country but it’s tough. For me it’s not a mental problem, it’s a physical problem. I am ready to play mentally, but physically two and a half weeks was hard.”
