Rafael Nadal To Miss Davis Cup Quarterfinal Against USA in a Few Weeks

It has been reported by La Marca that Rafael Nadal wont be playing the Davis Cup quarterfinal against the USA in Austin July 8-10. It seems as though Nadal expects to make the Wimbledon final and then doesnt want to jump on a plane the next day to travel to Texas. Dont blame him really!

Roger Federer Pulls Out of Halle Due to Groin Pain

Roger Federer has pulled out of the Halle tournament due to groin pain. Roger was scheduled to face Lleyton Hewitt in the first round, but the Australia must now be feeling a lot more confident about his chances.

Roger said:

“I am very disappointed as it is one of my favorite tournaments on the ATP World Tour, but my body and especially my groin need a rest after the French Open. After talking with my team this morning, I feel that it is too big a risk to take a chance and aggravate it before Wimbledon.

I send my very best wishes to the tournament organisers and all my fans in Halle, and again I am so sorry I can’t go this year. But I will see you next year.”

Andy Roddick Out of French Open and ATP Made a Big Mistake Last Week

The other day we reported about Andy Roddick and Mardy Fish receiving a fine because they didnt play their doubles final in Rome, this was all due to Roddick’s shoulder injury. It seemed at the time that they were only fined because the ATP thought Andy was faking in injury to make sure he could play the French Open.

Well it has turned out that Andy was in fact injured and is now not even able to play at the French Open starting tomorrow.

Ohhhh this seems to yet be another big mistake from the ATP! Its about time that actually talked to the players more and took some advice.

Dinara Safina To Stop Playing Tennis

Unfortunately Dinara Safina has abandond tennis forever. Dinara has been suffering from a long term back injury and unfortunately she has been unable to overcome it.

Sadly Dinara was planning on playing the French Open and even tweeted about it only a few days ago.

Dinara you are going to be sorely missed!

She said: “I don’t know how long my time out is going to last. I don’t want to torture myself and my body anymore.

“I’m just tired of constant questions from my coach in training, ‘How is your back? Can you do this exercise?’.”

Safina added: ” I’m just tired of fighting with myself. At the moment I can’t do anything tennis-wise. When I can do certain moves without feeling lots of pain, then I would consider resuming my training.

“Right now I don’t care when I might return – this summer during the American hardcourt series, towards the end of the season or next year.

“I’ll take as much time as I need.”

Andy Roddick Fuming Over Rome Fine for Him and Mardy Fish

It seems as though Andy Roddick has spoken out about his recent docking of prize money due to an injury.

“We’re going to have to beg for the money we’ve earned. Why should Mardy be punished when I can’t play? Mardy has played the (semifinal) match, he won the match, he earned the money, you can’t take away something he has already done. This is embarrassing for the tour.”

Andy was talking about the fine him and Mardy Fish received ($42,800) when they pulled out of the Rome doubles final.

Kim Clijsters Injured Herself Dancing at Nephews Wedding

It seems like Kim Clijsters has injured herself while dancing at the wedding of her nephew. With only the French Open weeks away, this isnt the time for Clijsters to get injured.

Clijsters turned her ankle while dancing (wonder if there was any alcohol involved! haha).

Clijsters revealed the news on her website (translated from Dutch):

At the wedding party of her cousin Tim, Kim injured her ankle severely. The consequences are rather dire. After a visit to the doctor, echo and NMR the diagnosis is a severe strain of both the medial and lateral ligaments of the right ankle and a torn ligaments, a torn capsule of the ankle joint, a hematoma and torn tendon sheath.

Jelena Jankovic has retired injured from the Slovenia Open yesterday. Jankovic was cruising at 6-1, 2-1 against qualifier Anastasiya Yakimova then stepped awkwardly when chasing a ball on the baseline and twisted her ankle. Jankovic continued to play after getting medical help, but lost that set 6-3 and eventually retired after losing the first game of the third.

It was her first tournament since Wimbledon, where she retired in the fourth round with a back injury.

Frank Dancevic sustained an injury in the qualifying rounds of the Atlanta event this week when he crashed into the scoreboard. Dancevic was playing match point against Nick Lindahl when he crashed into the scoreboard.

Tomas Berdych Out of Czech Davis Cup Team or Is He Just Taking Some Time Off

On the back of making the Wimbledon final, Tomas Berdych has decided to take a little break and ruled himself out of the Czech Republic’s Davis Cup quarterfinal against Chile because of an abdominal muscle injury.

“If I have a problem, it’s this muscle,” Berdych told Czech public radio on Sunday just hours after losing the Wimbledon final to Rafael Nadal 6-3, 7-5, 6-4.

“The windy conditions [in the match] contributed to it,” Berdych said. “There are so many matches but I have just one body. Nobody’s a machine to cope with everything.”

On Facebook, the Czech team said that Berdych will take a three-week rest after his first Grand Slam final.

The Czech team will now consist of Jan Hajek and Ivo Minar, with Lukas Dlouhy and Frantisek Cermak teaming up for the doubles.

Ivo Karlovic Withdraws from Wimbledon with Foot Injury

The big serving Croatian Ivo Karlovic has withdrawn from Wimbledon with a foot injury. Karlovic reached the quarterfinals last year, so he is going to lose a lot of ranking points. Im sure the points are the least of his worries, especially considering with the size of his serve and how good his volleys are, he would have a chance of doing very well.

The 6-foot-10 Karlovic has been bothered for months by an Achilles tendon injury in his right foot and also missed the French Open.

With his withdrawal Thursday, Romania’s Victor Hanescu was elevated one spot in the seedings at No. 32.

Elena Demetieva Pulls out of Wimbledon 2010

Elena Dementieva is out of Wimbledon. Dementieva suffered a calf injury in the second round of Roland Garros and hasnt recovered. The Russian was forced out of her semifinal against eventual winner Francesca Schiavone because of the injury, her first retirement in 43 major appearances.

Last year Elena reached the semi-finals at Wimbledon, so with her not playing this year she will most definitely be out of the top 10.

Fernando Gonzalez To Miss Wimbledon

Fernando Gonzalez will miss Wimbledon 2010 due to a knee injury he sustrained during the European clay court season.

Speaking on his official website, Gonzalez had the following to say to his fans.

“The treatment I’m receiving makes me stop for a long time. If I come back for Davis Cup it would make the injury get worse and I won’t even be at my 50 percent for those matches,” Gonzalez wrote on his official website. “I feel really bad about not playing the competition I like the most. I wish things were different but they aren’t.

“If everything turns out as I hope, my return tournament will be at Masters 1000 Toronto.”

David Nalbandian Focused on Wimbledon Return

David Nalbandian is expected to be fit for Wimbledon. David has sets his sights on competing once again at The Championships starting on June 21.

Nalbandian was forced to pull out of Roland Garros this year because of a hamstring injury. Nalbandian’s medical team has asked him to not accept an invitation to play the Queens Club event, just so he will be ready for Wimbledon.

The popular Argentine said, “I am very focused on my recovery, I am training in double shifts to try to play Wimbledon.”

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga Might Now Miss Wimbledon

After retiring from the French Open Jo-Wilfried Tsonga will most probably miss the whole grass court season, including Wimbledon.

The Frenchman underwent scans that confirmed a muscle lesion in his hip and he’ll probably have to rest for the next 10 days.

Then he’ll have to undergo another checkup to see if he can play at the Wimbledon which is scheduled to start on June 21.

Dinara’s Back!

This week sees the return of former WTA number1 Dinara Safina to competitive tennis. Dinara retired from her 4th round match at the Australian Open, sighting a back injury that has been plaguing her since Cincinnati.

“After that match, I had an MRI and I had two stress fractures on  L5S1 and a rupture on the muscle,”

She has spent time convalescing in Croatia, working with her physio Tomislav Vrbnjak.

“He is really one of the best I’ve ever had in my life and he is really taking the best care of   me,” Safina said.

She plays Agnes Szavay today at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, at around 8pm local time.

Dinara Safina Will Not Return to WTA Tour Any Time Soon

Former world number 1 Dinara Safina will not be returning to the WTA tour any time soon.

Safina has been off the competitive circuit since the 2010 Australian Open. She had severely injured her back during the 2009 summer season, but had continued to play up through the Australian Open, when she was forced to retire in the fourth round while playing against her countrywoman, Maria Kirilenko.

On Friday, Safina publicly revealed the extent of her injury in a blog entry on her official website.

“My injury from Australia was pretty bad and takes so long to heal. The problem is that I had it since Cincinnati last year, and since then had been playing all the time while on pain killers. My back was really bad there but I didn’t feel anything the rest of the season until my last match at the Australian Open. After that match, I had an MRI and I had two stress fractures on L5S1 and a rupture on the muscle. That was the worst news I could ever hear from a doctor, but now finally I’m recovering, though not as fast as I would prefer.”

Though her recovery has been slow, Safina has now resumed practicing. She has not announced a time frame for her return. Currently she is in Croatia working with her physio, Tomislav Vrbnjak. “He is really one of the best I’ve ever had in my life and he is really taking the best care of me.”

The Internazionali BNL d’ Italia is a Premier event on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour and is one of tennis’ biggest events on clay before Roland Garros.

Maria Sharapova Pulls Out of Family Circle Cup with Elbow Injury

Maria Sharapova has withdrawn from the Family Circle Cup due to an elbow injury. This is a big blow for the Family Circle Cup who would have sold a lot more tickets if Sharapova had been playing.

The Family Circle Cup is scheduled to begin later this week with a strong player field led by four Top 10 players including World No. 1 and former Cup champion Serena Williams, World No. 2 Caroline Wozniacki, World No. 7 and former Cup Champion Jelena Jankovic, and World No. 9 Victoria Azarenka. The Family Circle Cup, a Sony Ericsson WTA Tour Premier Event, is scheduled April 10-18, 2010 at the Family Circle Tennis Center in Charleston, SC.

“I was looking forward to coming back to Charleston this year, as I always enjoy playing in front of the energetic fans and strolling around the town,” commented Sharapova. “Unfortunately my elbow injury is not completely healed so I won’t be able to compete in this year’s Family Circle Cup. I look forward to returning next year and seeing all my fans in South Carolina.”

“It’s unfortunate that Maria was forced to withdraw due to injury, and we hope she makes a quick return to the Tour,” said Eleanor Adams, Family Circle Cup Tournament Manager. “Despite the loss of one high profile competitor, our player field still boasts four of the Top 10 players in the world. Our fans are sure in for a treat as our draw also features four Family Circle Cup champions and a host of other marquis players about to arrive in Charleston.”

John Isner has pulled out of the French Open starting tomorrow cause of illness. Isner accepted a wildcard into the event by winning a qualifying tournament held by the U.S. Tennis association. The USTA has now returned the wildcard slot to the French tennis federation, which has since handed the wildcard to world number 310 Romain Jouan of France.

Other players to have pulled out of the French Open include Dmitry Tursunov of Russia and Mario Ancic of Croatia. Tursunov has a heel injury and Ancic pulled out because of lack of fitness.
