Who do you think has the best keepy-uppy skills between Andy Murray, Jo Wilfried Tsonga and Fernando Verdasco? Well Adidas challenged them all and its very interesting to see who comes out on top!
We have reached the last tournament of the ATP season featuring the 8 best players of the year competing for the ultimate honor in men’s tennis. Let’s take a look at the two groups and who will feature in each one.
Group A:
1. Novak Djokovic
3. Andy Murray
5. David Ferrer
7. Tomas Berdych
Group B:
2. Rafael Nadal
4. Roger Federer
6. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga
8. Mardy Fish
Play is due to start on Sunday November 20, 2011 at 7 am Eastern time with coverage being streamed on the Tennis Channel in the US. First up is Group B with Federer vs Tsonga and later on Nadal vs Fish. There should be some very good tennis up on display during the week and it will be exciting to see which of the Top 4 will hold up best, or if a dark horse should emerge from the shadows to claim the title at this year’s year-ending championships. Stay tuned!
Labor Day at the US Open wasnt a great day for Mardy Fish. Fish was very upset after dropping his first service game in the final set of his match against Jo Wilfried Tsonga.
But it was hugs at the net in the end.
Mardy did his best to explain the incident in the pressroom:
“I was talking to the umpire. I probably shouldn’t have said that. Like I said, we were fired up,” Fish said.
Jo-Wilfried revealed himself to be completely unreasonable and probably a dumbass:
“I just hear he was a bit upset at somebody in my box,” Tsonga said. “So, you know, I think we are just here to play tennis. I just said, ‘Okay, I will go tell them to stop, and that’s it.’ There is no problem.”
“With Mardy, it’s all the time friendly. It’s good.”
The injury list for the US Open is growing by the day, so it is going to be a very interesting tournament. The only top male player not on the list is Roger Federer.
Novak Djokovic – Shoulder and general fatigue. Has had some issues with patella tendinitis this season
Rafael Nadal – Large burn blisters on fingers and left foot
Andy Murray – Sore arm
Mardy Fish – Heel
Tomas Berdych – Shoulder
Robin Soderling – Wrist – he has announced he will travel to NYC
Jo Wilfried Tsonga – Arm. Ultrasound showed no muscle tear after he withdrew in Montreal.
Andy Roddick – Recently pulled out of Montreal with an oblique but played in Cincinnati.
Milos Raonic – Recovering from hip surgery
David Ferrer – Recovering from hairline fracture in left hand
Tommy Robredo – Withdrawn – Ongoing groin issues
Sam Querrey – Withdrawn – Recovering from elbow surgery (spurs)
Juan Carlos Ferrero – Recovering from multiple injuries
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga knocks out yet another seed in Montreal. Roger Federer fell to Tsonga 7-6 4-6 6-1.
Tsonga played a very powerful match in which he never let up. Tsonga ran away with a 5-0 lead in the final set and was able to close it out quite easily.
Now Novak Djokovic is the only one of the top four seeds left. Is this a sign of things to come at the US Open?
It is August the 8th and guess what day it is? It’s Roger Federer’s birthday! Yes, the 16 time Grand Slam champion has passed the threshold of becoming 30 years old and he had this to say about his milestone: “Birthdays happen. They’re part of life. I’m happy I’m getting older. I’d rather be 30 than 20, to be honest.”
That seems pretty logical since you are as young as you feel and at 20, he didn’t have as much success as when he reached 30.
Many are questioning whether he will win another Grand Slam and he very well might since there were plenty of Grand Slam champions in the past who had won Grand Slams after reaching 30. For example, Andre Agassi won the Australian Open when he was 32 and then even Francesca Schiavone won her first Grand Slam when she was 30, so there are plenty of chances for him to claim his victory on the big stage in the coming years.
He will be competing at the Rogers Cup Masters Tournament in Montreal this week, and he is in the same half as world number 1 Novak Djokovic as well as some other big guns such as Juan Martin del Potro, Bernanrd Tomic and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
I also found a video from Roger, giving his thanks to his fans after turning 30. Happy Birthday Roger and good luck for many years to come.
Yesterday we witnessed an amazing upset on center court where six time champion Roger Federer lost in five sets to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.3-6 6-7 6-4 6-4 6-4.
This was the first time Roger Federer has been up two sets to love and lost the match.
I know you have probably already read some amazing roundups of the match, so Im not going to run through it all again. I just wanted to say Congrats to Tsonga! Jo-Wilfried you probably played the match of your life today!
In the mens first round we saw the early performances from David Ferrer and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga who both won their matches in straight sets. Ferrer looked incredibly good as he swept past a strong Jarkko Nieminen.
In other results Julien Benneteau performed well in front of his local crowd, while Stanislas Wawrinka looked at home on the French clay. The only real upset of the day was Marin Cilic (19) falling to Spaniard Ruber Ramirez Hidalgo.
Womens Singles:
Julia Goerges has continued her great form with a very strong performance in the first round defeating Mathilda Johansson. Winners also included Samantha Stosur, Jelena Jankovic, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Anastasia Pavluchenkova.
The only real upsets on the womens side of the draw was Shahar Peer (19) losing to Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, and Flavia Pennetta (18) being defeated by Varvara Lepchenko in three very tough sets.
Overall:
The performances of the day definitely came from Samantha Stosur who will look to go one step better this year and win the title. While on the mens side David Ferrer was very strong and it will take a lot to defeat him on the clay.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is now in doubt for the US Open. L’Equipe, France’s leading tennis magazine, recently spoke with Tsonga about his current knee injury. The injury was sustained in the quarterfinal loss to Andy Murray at Wimbledon. Tsonga will now undergo his final MRI just before the start of the US Open.
Jo-Wilfried Tsonga downed fellow Frenchman Julien Benneteau 6-4 3-6 6-3 6-4 to record his maiden win at the French Open on Tuesday and celebrated the occasion by wearing a tie to his post-match news conference.
“This is my first victory here. I celebrate this victory like this,” a beaming Tsonga told reporters while showing off his navy blue tie. “I wanted to come in a tuxedo … but my sponsor didn’t really want me to. Now I’ve found a solution.”
Asked if he would wear a bow tie if he ended up winning the tournament, Tsonga responded: “If I win, I will wear whatever you want but not a G-string.”
Tsonga, who lost in straight sets to Andy Roddick in his only appearance at Roland Garros in 2005, prevailed after two hours 43 minutes on a windswept Centre Court.
Slovakian glamour girl, Daniela Hantuchova, is the latest to confirm her attendance at the Brisbane International in January.
The world number 19 was a semifinalist at the Australian Open in 2008 and broke into the top 10 when she reached number 5 in August 2002.
She will be joined by French Open Champion Ana Ivanovic and reigning Australian Women’s Hardcourt Champion Na Li in the women’s draw.
The men’s draw boasts Novak Djokovic, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Marcos Baghdatis, Gael Monfils, Richard Gasquet and Mardy Fish with the player cut off date, for the tournament ,on the 21 November.
Daniela Hantuchova said “I am really excited about returning to Australia and playing a strong field in the lead up to the Grand Slam.
“I took home some really nice memories last year. It was something very special for me.
“With my preparation this year and the quality field at the Brisbane International, I will be even more ready.
“I love Australia and have played in tournaments there since 2001. I am looking forward to playing in this new event and challenging some high quality players in the lead up to the Australian Open.”
