Kei Nishikori First Japanese Male Player to Make Australian Open Quarterfinals

Kei Nishikori has become the first Japanese male player to make the quarterfinals of the Australian Open with his 2-6, 6-2, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 upset of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

“When you have a guy in front of you who return everything, even when you serve 215 [kilometers per hour], it put lot of pressure,” Tsonga said. “It’s tough to play against him because he run a lot and everything’s coming back. Even when he’s far in the point, he come back on his line.”

Matthew Ebden Puts Up and Amazing Fight at Australian Open 2012

Matthew Ebden is out of the Australian Open 2012, but he put up an amazing fight. Ebden lost in five sets to 24th seed Kei Nishikori 1-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, 6-1.

“I think it’s extremely disappointing, but I have to give him a bit of credit. Probably for an hour and a half he might have missed less than five balls,” Ebden said.

Here I am doing what I love, so I’m just going to take it on the chin, look to be better, stronger, fitter, become a better player out of it and try to win that one next time.

Roger Federer Wins the Basel Title Over Kei Nishikori

Roger Federer has won his home tournament yet again in Basel. Federer had a pretty easy run to the title defeating Kei Nishikori 6-1 6-3 in the final.

“It was a perfect match for me. Now I have big hopes for Paris and London. I’m very happy, as I got better as the week went on. I definitely saved the best for last at the tournament. I played really well today in the final

I’m feeling really fit and I’m ready for more. I’m very hungry and fired up.”

p.s. Kei Nishikori played an amazing match in the semifinals in which he defeated Novak Djokovic 2-6 7-6 6-0.

Kei Nishikori Retires at US Open 2011 with Lower Back Injury

It is always a shame to see players retire in a tournament, let alone a Grand Slam event. Kei Nishikori is a very popular player who has had to pull out of the US Open 2011 with a lower back injury.

Flavio Cipolla was leading 6-4, 6-2 on Monday when Nishikori retired.

Im sure Nishikori will be back at the US Open and hopefully next time he can improve his preparation for the tournament and make sure he doesnt get injured.

Kei Nishikori Helps Japan Defeat Uzbekistan in Davis Cup

Kei Nishikori has defeated Denis Istomin to get Japan in the Davis Cup World Group playoffs. Nishikori defeated Istomin 6-7 7-5 6-4 6-3 to give Japan a 3-1 win.

This win has given Japan a chance to make the World Group in the Davis Cup for the first time since 1985.

It seems as though Kei Nishikori has signed a sponsorship deal with UNIQLO.

UNIQLO is a Japanese brand, which boasts an impressive lineup of trendy wear, is also endorsed by high profile celebrities, Charlize Theron and Orlando Bloom.

Kei Nishikori Withdraws from The French Open

Kei Nishikori of Japan is withdrawing from the French Open because of an injured right elbow.

Nishikori has not played since losing in the first round at Indian Wells, Calif., in March.

He was honored as the ATP’s newcomer of the year for 2008, in part because of his run to the fourth round of the U.S. Open. He was the first Japanese man since 1937 to make it that far at that tournament.

Once ranked as high as No. 56, Nishikori is currently 117th. He has played only 10 tour matches this year.

The French Open begins Sunday.
