Li Na Highest Earning Female Tennis Player

Li Na is now by far the richest tennis player! Maria Sharapova was previously the highest, earning over $24 million each year in prizemoney and endorsements. Now, Li Na has over $42 million on endorsement contracts.

“We could do five more endorsement deals but she just doesn’t have the time,” said Eisenbud, a vice president at Coral Gables, Florida-based IMG Tennis who signed Li in November 2009. “It’s incredible.”

Since winning the French Open, Li Na has signed contracts with Daimler and Chinese insurance company Taikang Life Insurance Co.

“It was hard to set the price” after Li’s triumph in Paris, Eisenbud said. “We had to change it a lot.”

Maria Sharapova to Start 2012 at the Brisbane International

Next year Maria Sharapova will be starting her 2012 campaign at my home tournament of the Brisbane International 2012. It is great to see Maria and other players are heading to the event, which has been growing very nicely over the past few years.

It was about time we had another large tennis tournament in Queensland and Brisbane. I remember when they used to play all the big tournaments at Milton!

Maria Sharapova May Have Bought a House in England

It has been rumored that Grand Slam champion and former world number 1, Maria Sharapova has been outed as the mystery buyer of a terraced house worth 10,000 British pounds, which is located on Pritchard Street in Burnley, Lancashire (really Burnley, not the nicest place in the world!).

The property, listed as being possibly the UK’s cheapest house, is in need of extensive renovation and refurbishment, but it is within easy walking distance of Scott Park, which happens to have some tennis courts. Some sources also say that she plans to construct an underground complex right under the house which could be worth around 6 million British pounds.

These are only rumors, but it would be an interesting choice of housing for Maria… if it were true.

Maria Sharapova Will Not Play ASB Classic in 2012

World number 5, Maria Sharapova has decided not to play the ASB Classic which is held in Auckland, New Zealand but instead commit to the Brisbane event which will be promoted to Premier status for next year’s tournament. She played at the Auckland event this year as a warm-up for the Australian Open but lost in the quarters to eventual champion Greta Arn. She was the number one seed and was payed an appearance fee of over US$100,000, despite the fact that she earned only around US$5000 as prize money.

I hope the Kiwi fans won’t be upset at her decision, and now the Australian crowd has so much to look forward to at the next Brisbane tournament, especially since the event attracted so many star players in the past.

Kvitova Shocks Sharapova for First Slam Title at Wimbledon 2011

Petra Kvitova went into the Wimbledon final today feeling just a bit nervous. And you should be, going on to play the most important match of your life, especially since your opponent is the former champion and favorite to win the title, Maria Sharapova. But as soon as she stepped on the court she felt fine and ready to battle for the biggest title in tennis.

Petra took control from the start, using her lefty advantage and that serve out wide that has troubled many of her previous opponents. She took the first set with a score of 6-3. The second set started off in her favor once again as the Russian player couldn’t find any way to get the Czech player on the ropes. There were a couple of hiccups on the serve of Kvitova in the middle of the set as Kvitova served 3 double faults to give Sharapova a couple of breaks, even though she had none in the first set. Kvitova still had a huge advantage as she kept Sharapova guessing on where her serve would go and also her penetrating groundstrokes gave Sharapova a lot of trouble controlling each point.

Finally it came to match point and what better way to finish it off than with an ace. Kvitova raised her arms in victory and knelt down to kiss the grass. With Martina Navratilova watching from the Royal Box as well as many other great champions such as Martina Hingis, Lindsay Davenport and Billie Jean King, Kvitova felt very blessed to be supported by her childhood idol and gave thanks to Martina for all of her great advice. She also gave a shout out to her parents and her trainer during her little speech.

Sharapova of course handled her loss with grace and congratulated Kvitova on her win, stating that she was just too good today. A champion should handle losses with poise and Sharapova did just that today. Both players then made a lap around the court with their trophies and Kvitova came out of the tennis club to get her picture taken by fans that were waiting outside the doors of the club, as many others have done before her.

Congratulations to both players for their grace and composure and to Kvitova especially for winning her first Grand Slam. Bravo!
