Wimbledon To Also Makeover Court 3 by 2011

wimbledon-courtA new Court 3 will be built at Wimbledon in time for the 2011 championships.

The new 2,000-seat court will occupy the site of the old Court 2, with work getting under way in July and scheduled to finish by May 2011.

“With its unofficial name of the ‘Graveyard of the Champions,’ old Court 2 has played its part in framing Wimbledon history,” All England Club chairman Tim Phillips said in a statement Friday.

“While acknowledging that contribution, we also have to consider Wimbledon’s future and the time is now right to build a court with all the excellent spectator comforts that people have come to expect at the Championships.”

A new Court 2 is opening at this year’s tournament at another site on the grounds.

French Open Centre Court To Get New Retractable Roof

new-roland-garros-roofThe French Tennis Federation has chosen the architect for a new retractable roof over the Roland Garros centre court, which will be ready in 2011 to prevent any rain delays at the French Open.

The new roof at Roland Garros will cover the centre court. The courts in a planned extension not far away from the main stadium are also set to get roofs.

The federation unanimously chose Marc Mimram as the architect for the project in a vote today. Mimram is well known as the designer of the overpass that connects France and Germany across the Rhine River in Strasbourg.

Wimbledon is using a retractable roof on its centre court for the first time this year.
